Concrete Floor Sawing for Expansion Cuts

Wigan
Snuggledown

The Project Brief:

Our client, Snuggledown, a leading bedding business based in Wigan, got in touch with us as they required our specialist concrete sawing service for their flooring.

They needed expansion cuts created in their concrete floor slab to prevent potential cracking and damage, ensuring the longevity of their office space in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire.

To avoid cracks forming in the client’s concrete flooring, our team was tasked with creating neat, accurate expansion cuts using our advanced floor sawing technique. As accredited concrete specialists, this, alongside our diamond drilling service, is one of our most sought-after commercial services and involves using a saw with a diamond-tipped blade to make precise, straight-line cuts in the concrete, allowing for controlled expansion and contraction movements.

Expansion Cutting and Concrete Longevity:

When it comes to flooring for a warehouse or shop floor, concrete is an excellent choice due to its versatility and resistance to water, stains and fire. However, something that is often overlooked is the need for expansion cuts to prevent damage that can impact your floor slab and impact the structural integrity of your building. It’s for this reason that Snuggledown needed our floor sawing expertise on this project.

Expansion cutting involves creating joints or cuts in the concrete to allow for the natural expansion and contraction that occur with temperature changes and moisture fluctuations. This process is essential for maintaining the integrity and longevity of the concrete floor slab. If expansion cutting is not done properly, it can lead to cracking and damage over time - making your floor both dangerous and unsightly, not ideal for a commercial setting that will likely have lots of staff and visitors on site.

Expansion cuts allow the concrete floor slab to move naturally without causing damage. They create spaces for the concrete to expand into during hot weather and contract into during cold weather. By strategically placing these cuts, the stress on the concrete is minimised, preventing cracks from forming. Expansion cuts also help to control where cracks occur, ensuring they happen in straight lines rather than randomly across the floor - so they’re a pretty essential step when installing new concrete flooring.
