Core Drilling in Manchester City Centre

Manchester
Downing Construction

The Project Brief:

Our team at DP Diamond Drilling are proud to have worked on a crucial core drilling project for Downing Construction, contributing to the ongoing development of a high-rise building on First Street, Manchester. As concrete specialists based in the North West, it is quite often that we find ourselves working on diamond drilling projects in Manchester - so we were pleased to take on this commercial project in the city centre.

Downing Construction, our client, specifically sought our specialist drill services as they were looking for a local contractor who could easily facilitate the installation of essential lift shaft call buttons within the new building.

Core Drilling:

For this project, we did a wide range of drilling work, including creating 25mm diameter holes at a precise 30-degree angle to accommodate the lift shaft call buttons seamlessly. To achieve this, we used specialised equipment - a small, tight compact diamond drill and rig designed specifically for efficient drilling in confined spaces and around existing services.

As usual with wall drilling, the choice of equipment was of the utmost importance, due to the intricacies of the project. It’s for this reason that we opted for the compact drill and rig that we knew would ensure precision, without impacting our ability to navigate through tight spaces with ease. This was particularly important as the nature of high-rise construction often entails limited working areas and intricate spatial constraints.

How does core drilling work?

Core drilling is a technique used to create precise and clean holes in various materials, such as concrete, asphalt, or stone. It involves using a hollow drill bit, known as a core bit, that removes a cylindrical core of material from the surface. This method is commonly used in construction and renovation projects where drilling perfect holes is crucial for installing utilities, creating openings for pipes or electrical wiring, or even for creating test samples - making it the perfect choice for this Manchester-based project.

Our team of skilled professionals is well-versed in the art of core drilling. We have the expertise and experience to handle projects of all sizes and complexities. Our state-of-the-art equipment and advanced techniques ensure that we can deliver precise and accurate results every time, and this project for Downing Construction was no exception.

When it comes to core drilling, we follow a meticulous process. First, we will assess the project requirements and determine the appropriate drill bit size and type needed. Then, we carefully mark the drilling points to ensure accuracy. We take into account factors such as the material's thickness, hardness, and any potential obstacles that may affect the drilling process. In this case, working within a compact space at a 30-degree angle meant that we needed to opt for a smaller drill to complete the project.

Once the area is marked and ready, our team begins drilling using our powerful core drilling tools, designed to provide stability and control, ensuring that the holes are drilled perfectly straight and at the desired depth. Throughout each drilling process for jobs both large and small, our team monitors the drilling speed and adjusts it accordingly to achieve optimal results.

As this core drilling project was for lift shaft button installation, it was important to create perfect holes in the structure to avoid complications on site later down the line. Being our area of expertise, this was something the team managed to achieve both efficiently and safely.

How did we do it?

Our experienced drilling team executed this project with meticulous attention to detail, adhering to the specified angle and diameter requirements needed by our client. The accuracy of the holes was crucial to the success of the lift shaft call button installation, and our team ensured that every aspect of the core drilling process met the highest standards.

Furthermore, our commitment to safety and efficiency was evident throughout the project. Our team followed strict safety protocols, and the use of top-notch equipment helped minimise disruptions to the surrounding site.

So, what did the client think?

We’re proud to have played an important role in Downing Construction’s high-rise building project on First Street, Manchester. Our core drilling expertise and use of the finest drilling equipment enabled us to deliver precise 25mm diameter holes at the required 30-degree angle, creating the necessary space for the installation of lift shaft call buttons.
